This time of year, I find myself to be somewhat of a shut-in.
It seems like it’s always dark outside and constantly freezing. While I long for the lighter, warmer days that I know March and April will eventually bring, I also like to think of creative ways to connect with friends, family and my community in the meantime.
A few months ago, I saw an idea online that seemed intriguing: Create a coffee-shop or café vibe at home to enjoy with friends. I gave it a test run in early December.
It was a warm and cozy success — so much so that I hope to plan another at-home-café, as it seems like the perfect answer to the post-holiday winter blues.
It’s a gathering that can be as simple as you please or as elaborate as you find fun and enjoyable. Read on for some ideas to get started.
- Craft a cute invite or flyer to share snail-mail style with friends or post online. Many sites like Canva offer free, easy-to-use templates that can be customized.
- Make a menu of easy-to-eat bites that taste good at room temperature. Think of your own café or coffee shop favorites: muffins, sweet rolls and savory pastries are all great options. Many of these can be baked and frozen ahead of time to make preparation easy.
Also, don’t underestimate the wonderful thing that is frozen puff pastry dough! If you’re not an at-home-baker, pick up some frozen options or place a order from your local shop.
- Diversify your drink options so everyone can find something that fits their needs. Plan for a variety of hot and cold beverages, caffeine and decaf options and non-dairy swaps, too.
- Set the stage of a relaxed café vibe with warm lighting, soft tunes, a puzzle or game or two and plenty of cozy seating spaces. You might even rearrange your living room a bit! Roll out a swath of brown kraft paper on the counter or table for your bakery spread.
If you want to be a bit more elaborate, create some fun food and beverage menu or other signage.
When the day comes, don some comfy clothes and spend the mid-morning or afternoon catching up with your friends and family in the comfort of your own home. Even better, your guests will be home before the cold and darkness sets in, too!
