Experiencing a traditional Christmas market is one of the great joys of the holiday season in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and across Europe.
These open-air festivals date back nearly seven centuries, filling town squares with handcrafted gifts, festive foods, music and the warmth of community during the darkest days of the year.
A highlight for many is Glühwein—the spiced mulled wine that has been part of winter traditions for generations.

Same spirit in downtown St. Paul
That same spirit comes alive each year in downtown St. Paul through the European Christmas Market (ECM), a nonprofit event that brings the sights, sounds, and flavors of these beloved traditions to Union Depot.
This year’s Market opened on Nov. 28 and runs weekends through Dec. 21.
Held outdoors at Union Depot in downtown St. Paul off of Kellogg Boulevard, the European Christmas Market is free and open to all.
Hours:
Fridays from 3–9 p.m.,
Saturdays from 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
Sundays from 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
     Â
The Market offers something for every age: visits with Santa, performances by choirs and traditional dance groups, and hands-on activities for children. There’s even a free carousel and train for visitors.
Shoppers can explore artisan booths offering handcrafted gifts and treat themselves to a variety of European-inspired foods. Savory favorites include Spätzle, German brats, Austrian goulash, Shepherd’s pie, German pretzels and raclette—the beloved melted Norwegian cheese served warm over vegetables or cold-cuts.
There are also plenty of sweet treats to enjoy, including beignets, crepes, bread pudding and strudel.
And no Christmas market would be complete without Glühwein. Guests can warm up with the Market’s signature mulled wine—with non-alcoholic options available as well—served in three cozy warming tents and poured into this year’s commemorative mugs.
The Market welcomes visitors for its final weekend, December 19–21, offering a festive experience for all ages.Â
Guests can download a free Metro Transit pass from ECM’s website, with the light rail delivering you directly to Union Depot. Learn more at StPaulChristmasMarket.org.
